Perjury and Related Offences Bill 2018 – An Bille um Mionnú Éithigh agus Cionta Gaolmhara, 2018
I was honored to introduce the Perjury and Related Offences Bill 2018 in Seanad Éireann this week.
I look forward to a robust debate at second stage on Wednesday next the 24th October 2018.
The four overarching objectives of the Bill are:
- To provide for a statutory offence of perjury that can be properly interpreted by investigators, prosecutors and the courts alike.
- To provide for statutory perjury related offences including false statements on oath, false statutory declarations, false declarations, etc., to obtain registration, etc., for carrying on a vocation or profession.
- To provide for clear statutory penalties for perjury to act as both deterrent to the offence of perjury and sufficiently punitive to reflect the substantial effect a perjury can have.
- To update, repeal and consolidate historical statutory provisions concerning the offence of perjury or related to the offence of perjury.
Many thanks to my Seanad colleagues Senator Ian Marshall, Senator Michael McDowell and Senator Victor Boyhan for co-sponsoring this Bill.
